The honor killing was to avenge the girl’s ‘crime’ of talking to her fiance on the phone.

Police in Yemen have arrested a 35-year old man who they accuse of burning his 15-year-old daughter to death. The honor killing

was to avenge the daughter’s “crime” of talking to her fiancé.

Reuters reports that the police issued the following statement on their website: “The father committed this heinous crime on the pretext that his daughter had been keeping contacts with her fiance.” Local news websites said that the father had caught his daughter talking on the phone with the fiance.

Strict honor codes in Yemen prohibit contact between the sexes before marriage.

Outrage over the incident follows the international outcry over the death of an 8-year-old Yemenite girl who died on her wedding night last month after suffering massive internal injuries from her 40-year old groom.
