Tor Johnson as The Beast in THE BEAST OF YUCCA FLATS (Sci-Fi/Horror 1961) Stars... Tor Johnson Douglas Mellor Barbara Francis Commies Made Him An Atomic Mutant A defecting Russian scientist is transformed by an atomic test into a hulking monster, Tor Johnson, of course. Not much else except some people are killed, boys get lost, and a rabbit sniffs Tor's corpse. (This film was used for Mystery Science Theater 3000.) The Beast of Yucca Flats is one of those films with a budget so low (it looks like it was shot on weekend trips to the desert) that apparently no dialogue was written for the actors to speak, and the onus of explaining what is going on is placed on the narration. And what narration it is! Francis obviously has something important to say with his opus, and the voiceover poses such questions as "Flag on the Moon - how did it get there?", apropos of nothing. He has a problem with progress, or the wheels of progress anyway, and is sceptical that such modern creations as weapons of mass destruction are the way forward. This is a film worth seeing here for free because it is not one of those that you would purchase. Cheesy but fun to watch. Trivia: From the late 1940's to the early 1960's, there were hundreds of atomic tests performed at Yucca Flats, Nevada. The government plans on burying over 77,000 tons of nuclear waste in vast tunnels already dug in nearby Yucca Mountain. The site is 65 miles northwest of Las Vegas.
