Every film genre needs a good spoof. With the ever expanding popularity of superhero movies, it was about time one made fun of them. Joining the ranks of Spaceballs, Naked Gun, Scary Movie, and Not Another Teen Movie is (cue the percussion line and fast playing violins) Superhero Movie.
Rick Riker is your average geeky, klutzy teen awkwardly making his way through adolescence. Bumbling around on a class trip, he gets bitten by a genetically altered dragonfly. Now, Rick has developed superhuman abilities including great strength and armored skin. He decides to use the new found power for good, and possibly to get a date, as the costumed hero Dragonfly.
But, every great superhero needs a nemesis, and Lou Landers is the man for the job. Like many great villians, Landers wasn't so bad at first. Afflicted with a rare disease, he starts searching for ways to overcome the illness. After an experiment goes horribly wrong, he develops the ability to steal a person’s life force and begins a quest for immortality as the dastardly Hourglass. Dragonfly must fight the evil Hourglass before he destroys the world!
Written and directed by Craig Mazin, Superhero Movie predominately mocks Spider-Man, with Batman, X-Men, Superman, and Fantastic Four thrown in for comic measure. Drake Bell of Drake & Josh stars as Rick Riker and Christopher McDonald from last fall’s Awake plays Hourglass. Superhero Movie also stars Sara Paxton of Summerland, Jeffrey Tambor of Arrested Development, fantastic comedic actor of the Naked Gun movies Leslie Nielsen, and Marion Ross of Happy Days fame.
