Everyone anticipated a huge payday for Spider-Man 3 in its opening weekend. But Sony Pictures didn't imagine just how huge that payday would be. The third film in the Spider-Man franchise grossed $382 million worldwide last weekend, making its premiere the biggest worldwide opening of all time.
Stateside alone, the webslinging adventure grossed $151 million in North America, besting last year's record $135.6 million opening for Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Man's Chest.
According to Variety, "Sony had estimated [last] Sunday that Spidey swung to $148 million as the weekend wound down, but day three of the release continued to bring in boffo box office."
Variety went on to report, "Internationally, [Spider-Man 3] was No. 1 in all 107 territories in which it debuted and saw the biggest weekend ever in 29 markets -- three more than had been estimated -- including Japan, South Korea, China, Italy, Mexico and Brazil."
One thing's for sure: Peter Parker's arachnid alter-ego is one superhero who knows a thing or two about exceeding expectations!
