Doctor Solar
Friday, May 11, 2007
As part of 1962's Gold Key Comics debut, Doctor Solar, Man of the Atom was off to a promising start. Even though he was pretty much your standard issue superhero: physicist who gains powers in lab accident, it would be several issues before he became the kind of textbook case who simply has to do all his super feats in a costume.
Initially, Doctor Solar was very low-key, only saving lifes and stopping crimes in business suit and lab coat... which, quite frankly, is a fine choice if you're superhuman and want to remain inconspicuous about it. Even so, after five issues, creators Paul Newman and Matt Murphy added a red and black supersuit that became a character benchmark for the remaining seven years of his regular run.
He cropped up a few times after 1969, first in a 1970s title, then in his own series again during the early '80s. In 1990, Valiant obtained the hero's license and revamped him for the times, making his missions and undertakings more sobering and vigilant than they had been in previous runs. Even though, his presence has waned in the new millenium, Doctor Solar is still among the more well-respected superheroes of the '60s.
