Bone, the Eisner award winning comic book by Jeff Smith has been acquired by Warner Bros. to be made into a movie. It hasn’t been decided yet whether Bone will be an animated feature, live action, or combination of both. Warner Bros. has stated that the decision will be made following meetings with different filmmakers.
The rig
hts for Bone had been picked up by Nickelodeon in the 1990s but a television series or a movie did not result due to conflict over content. The kid-friendly network wanted to turn Bone into a children's series with young actors and bubblegum pop soundtrack, which Smith was opposed to.
The 55 issue self-published black and white comic ran throughout 1991-2004. Influences by Walt Kelly and Carl Barks can be seen in Bone, along with fantasy authors of the twentieth century like J.R.R. Tolkien. The Complete Bone, a 1332 page collection, was released years ago and sold well. Scholastic Books began issuing Bone full color trade paperbacks in 2004, and Volume 8: Treasure Hunters is due this August.
