Super Duck. Wilbur. Cosmo the Merry Martian. Suzie.
We’ll grant you that the names weren’t first in our thoughts, but there’s no denying that they evoke nostalgia for comic book readers who grew up in the 1940s, ‘50s and ‘60s. And now, if you’re not in that group, they’re probably at the very least raising your curiosity as well.
As part of Archie’s 70th anniversary, the company has announced that these characters and others will return as part of a two-part story that will run in Archie & Friends #137 and #138.
Written and drawn by Fernando Ruiz, “Cosmic Cosmosis” finds Chuck working at the comic shop when glowing meteorites from the MLJ Nebula suddenly rain down on Riverdale. One meteorite crashes into the shop and turns into a cosmic portal leads to a world that Chuck, Archie and his friends have only ever seen in comics, one populated by talking ducks and bears, super-powered heroes and oddball beings from other planets.
“It doesn’t take them long to realize they are in the presence of a veritable 'Who’s Who' of some of the greatest comic book characters ever published by Archie and its earlier incarnation, MLJ Comics: Captain Sprocket, Cosmo the Merry Martian, Squoimy the Woim, Gloomy Gus, Judge Owl, Ginger, Suzie and more,” the company said in a press release.
After getting a taste of the “real” world of Riverdale, will these classic characters from comics’ past want to ever go home again?
