Actor Jonathan Frid,who rose to fame and became cult favorite horror icon as Barnabas Collins on the original Dark Shadows, has passed away. He was born in December 2, 1924. Frid died Saturday, April 14, 2012, in Hamilton, Ontario at the age of 87.

The original series aired daily from 1966 to 1971, with Frid joining the cast in 1967. The show’s supernatural elements developed about six months into its run, first with ghosts and then the vampire portrayed by Frid. He performed mainly on stage after the series ended.

Frid is credited with a cameo in the upcoming Dark Shadows remake.

Frid died of natural causes on April 13, 2012, at Juravinski Hospital in Hamilton, Ontario.[
